Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Hottie?

Microwave heat packs uniquely designed for safety and to retain heat longer.

Hotties contain plant based material and water. When microwaved, the water heats up.

Because there are no water currents within the heat pack, the transfer of energy from the centre of the heat pack to the edge of your Hottie takes longer. This is why Hottie stays warmer longer.

How do I heat my Hottie?

Refer to the heating instructions on the enclosed safety sheet and on the white Hottie heat pack.

Please note, heating instructions in columns marked 1 and 2 are instructions for heating Hottie from cold (i.e. not recently used or 20°C)

Please see the heating times via this link.

To avoid damaging your Hottie do not exceed recommended heating times.

Many of our customers have two heat packs and simply heat their second heat pack instead of re-heating the recently used heat pack. This helps prevent accidental overheating and damage to your Hottie.

How do I re-heat my Hottie?

To re-heat your Hottie:

  1. Remove fabric cover if it prevents your Hottie rotating freely in the microwave
  2. Heat in microwave for 15-seconds
  3. Check temperature of your Hottie
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until Hottie is the appropriate temperature for you

Note: Re-heating your Hottie heat pack for longer than recommended time may damage your Hottie.

Many of our customers have two heat packs and simply heat their second heat pack instead of re-heating the recently used heat pack. This helps prevent accidental overheating and damage to your Hottie.

What Happens if Hottie is Overheated?

If overheated, Hottie will expand.

If this happens, stop microwave and leave Hottie to cool for at least ten minutes.

Hotties are designed to fail-safe in the event of overheating. This means, if overheated for a long period of time, the pouch is designed to split. This may create a “bang” noise, but is an important safety feature that prevents the build up of dangerous pressures and hot spots.

It is possible damage has been done to your Hottie if it expands. Please check your Hottie before re-using.

Please do not re-use popped Hotties.

If you pop your Hottie, please email us a photo of the popped Hottie plus a brief description of what happened. We will reply with a coupon for 20% off a replacement heat pack.

Email: sales@myhotties.com.au

We have been making Hotties since 1996 and in all that time we have never learned of a Hottie causing injury or exploding violently.

As Hottie contains no toxic gels or seeds, there is no danger of it catching fire or causing burns.

What should I do if I overheat Hottie and it pops?

If you overheat Hottie and it pops, leave in microwave for at least ten minutes before lifting out.

Please do not re-use overheated / popped Hotties.

If you pop your Hottie, please email us a photo of the popped Hottie plus a brief description of what happened. We will reply with a coupon for 20% off a replacement heat pack.

Can I apply Hottie to my skin straight away after heating?

We suggest placing your Hottie on a flat bench and smoothing it out to ensure the heat is even throughout the pack.

Then, hold Hottie to your forearm to check the temperature is right for your skin type and apply.

How long does the warmth last?

Heated correctly, your Hottie will stay warm for up to four hours.

Do Hotties have a use-by date?

Hotties have no use-by date. Many of our customers use the same Hottie for years, even decades.

How long a Hottie lasts is a function of how carefully it is heated. If always heated correctly there is no reason a Hottie should decline.

We urge people to take extra care when re-heating a recently used Hottie as this seems to be when most people accidentally overheat and damage their Hottie. Please see FAQ "How do I re-heat my Hottie?" for further information on re-heating a Hottie.

How does it work?

Hotties are thermal heat packs made with a uniquely designed heat pack that contains plant based material and water.

When microwaved, the water heats up.

Because there are no water currents within the heat pack, the transfer of energy from centre of the heat pack to the edge of your Hottie takes longer. This is why Hottie stays warmer longer.

What if my Hottie bursts?

Hottie is failsafe.

If overheated, it pops and oozes its water content. This is a built in feature designed to keep you safe. This safety feature also prevents Hottie reaching dangerous temperatures and pressures.

Hottie will not explode or burst violently if overheated. As Hottie contains no toxic gels or seeds there is no danger of it catching fire or causing burns.

If you overheat Hottie and it pops, leave in microwave for at least ten minutes before lifting out.

Please do not re-use overheated / popped Hotties.

If your Hottie pops, please email us a photo of popped Hottie and a description of what happened. We will reply with a coupon for 20% off a replacement heat pack.

Why do you say Hotties are safer than other heat packs?

Hottie is not a gel pack. Gel packs are known to explode and cause potentially fatal burns.

Hottie is not a wheat pack. Wheat and other grain filled packs are known to cause fatal fires and burns. This is because the grains within the wheat pack continue to heat up after being removed from the microwave and after several uses the grains dry out. As an added bonus because Hottie contains no grains or seeds it will not mould or rot.

Hottie is not a hot water bottle. Hot water bottles are known to cause burns. This is because of the fiddly design requiring filling with boiling water and also due to rubber bursting or splitting, spilling boiling water onto the user.

Hottie is failsafe.

Hotties have been around since 1996 and in all that time we’ve never heard of any incident where one of our Hotties has caused harm to a user.

We designed Hotties because we were concerned about rising incidences of injuries and even deaths caused by exploding heat and wheat packs catching on fire.

If overheated, Hottie pops and oozes its water content. This is a built in feature designed to keep you safe by preventing Hottie reaching dangerous temperatures and pressures.

Hottie will not explode or burst violently if overheated. As Hottie contains no gels or seeds there is no danger of it catching fire or causing burns.

What is inside my Hottie?

The Hottie patented heat pack contains water soaked into a medical grade, plant based non-woven pad. It does not contain wheat, gels or waxes. The liquid inside is water and is completely safe.

This product works

This product works well. I had replaced my microwave hot water bottle recently but the one I chose was like a brick in the bed. This product warms up in a microwave in about 90 seconds and stays warm overnight - brilliant - the brick is history!

Good, stays warm for ages

Isn't as hot as a rubber bottle filled with boiling water. 3 mins in a microwave and you're good to go.

Not as good as the old fashioned ones

Much smaller than a conventional hot water bottle, and it can’t be heated to a really high temperature. But preparing it is considerably less fussy! It’s ok for what it is, but not a patch on the old fashioned ones you fill each night. I also find it cools down pretty quickly.

Good way to get warmth for pain relief

Not cheap but a good way to get warmth into aching muscles without the risk of leaking as with a hot water bottle. Easy to warm up in the microwave but take heed of the warning not to leave it in too long. I tried putting in for another minute and it started to swell so switched off immediately! I bought this to go with the same product which I bought years ago. I am now able to apply heat simultaneously to both legs and obtain pain relief.

Its ok!

This is not what I expected. Yes the inside is lovely and hot but the outer cover stops the warmth from coming through which kind of defeats the object. I heated it on the maximum and although the inside was very hot, when the cover is on, its only warm and not as comforting as a hot water bottle or the wheat beanbags. I will keep it and use it occasionally but I prefer a hot water bottle or wheat beanbags unfortunately.

Don't leave cooking unattended

As with all microwaveable bottles, they can pop if overcooked. With other bottles I have found this can be easy to do if a bottle is kind of lukewarm and you are topping it up. Keep an eye on the bottle while cooking, and if it starts to swell, turn off!

Not as good as original hotties

I loved my old gel filled hotties which lasted for many years. These replacements are much smaller, much harder and give out less heat. They do stay warm for hours. The heat pad gets quite hot but the cover keeps the heat inside meaning it only feels warming.

Amazing for period pains and cystitis

I've had this for a couple of years now. I have endometriosis and it is a really nice extra comfort / pain relief whilst waiting for painkillers to kick in.It is also great if you have ever had Cystitis. My antibiotics haven't kicked in yet, painkillers don't do much (if you've ever had Cystitis you will know the exact pain I am talking about). Heat this up for 2 / 3 mins and lay down and place on your lower stomach and I promise you will feel some instant relief! I could cry lol, I actually may get some sleep this evening.

Hottie bag

This is a fantastic idea. It is a good size and stays warm for hours as long as it has contact with the body. This is the second one that I have purchased. The first one I purchased in pink for myself and this one in purple for my mother. We both suffer from various illnesses which involve pain. We both have lower back pain at night and this really helps a lot.I have fibromyalgia and rheumatoid Arthritis so with the hottie being flexible it means I can put it where it can help me most

Careful of leaks

I really like this as a heat pad/pain relief solution. I took great care to follow instructions to ensure longevity of item. Sadly it started to leak about a month ago. It took me a while to be sure it wasn’t just a bit wet off something else. I regained confidence in it as it wasn’t every time I used it (one corner). When I was certain is when I felt a burning after heating it and outer was quite damp. Luckily I had bought a second as a gift which I hadn’t used yet. I would recommend it when not leaking, but am not happy that it hasn’t lasted long.

Works fine.. should be round though.

Ideal for my office which gets freezing in the winter. I just don't understand why they didnt make this pillow round. It goes into a microwave and has to rotate but gets stuck in the corner so doesn't do so properly...so I'm always afraid that only a part of it is getting 'zapped' and will explode or something (will update if this does indeed happen) A round design would solve this easily.

Lasts longer then wheat bags, be sure to check the inside when seeing if its hot enough, not the ...

More fiddly to heat up then standard wheat bags due to having to turn them upside down during heating, however they seem to hold their heat a lot longer. Do be careful when heating though, they may not feel all that warm when you hold it so put your hand IN the fleece and test the gel bag itself, it can take a minute for the warmth to come through and you could risk over heating it it you gauge its actually heat through the fleece wrap.

Good as a hot water bottle - even better for pain relief.

If you have ever suffered from sciatica, you have my sincere sympathies. This little marvel can help, though. When sitting, it fits right where is should - in the small of your back - without forcing your posture into an uncomfortable position. Likewise, it will fit in the lumbar region when laying in bed. Pain does travel to your bum and right down to the toes with this horrible condition, but when travelling in the car, you can comfortably sit on the cushion on whichever side hurts the most.Read the instructions, DON'T overheat it in the microwave, and you have a friend for a long time.

Good product but thinner covers please!

My main problem with this product was the fleece cover, it insulates so well that unfortunately hardly any heat gets through! I guess this is for safety reasons, as it would certainly be impossible to burn yourself through the cover even if you overheated it. However I have had to ignore the instructions and use it without the cover in order to get any significant heat. This does mean that it's less comfortable, as the inner cover is just plastic. I would like the option of a thin cotton cover.Good product otherwise though, easy to use, heats up nice and quickly and holds its warmth well. Very comforting on a chilly day at home, or for warming your bed at night.

All good so far

I bought this a couple of months ago for my daughter who hates getting into a cold bed. I was a bit dubious about it after reading a couple of reviews by people who said theirs leaked but so far this one has been OK. It works out that we can heat it up to 2.5 mins in our microwave and to err on the side of caution we have only heated for 2 mins so far but that seems to be enough. The cover is quite thick and it doesn't always feel too hot through the cover but is too hot to touch inside the cover, however she is quite happy with it and also likes the fact that it is flat so she can lie on it if she wants to.

Easy to use and safer than hot water

I have had 3 of these but not all with the same cover. The first one did leak but this was after a few years of use and I noticed it straight away as I always check them before putting them into bed and the liquid was visible on the cover of the hottie straight away. I lost the second one and this purple one seems fine so far after a couple of months of use. I have used the hotties for both kids to take the chill off their beds and usually leave it in with them so do not heat them to a point where they are very hot. But the hotties can get very hot if you heat them for the maximum time so be careful! I am very cautious with them when they are really hot and would never leave them with the kids. If you heat them gradually and make sure you turn them over I have never had a problem getting them to a temperature I'm happy with. The only negatives I have found is that they can heat a little unevenly and also that the cover has a large opening so there is nothing to stop little hands and feet from touching the pad inside if they mess about with it. I did sew up the opening on one which solved this problem (you can put the cover in the microwave too so it doesn't need to come off).
